Essex win the delayed 2022 60+ 1st XI Cup Final
Chipstead Couldsen and Walcountians CC miraculously managed to beat the elements and prepare their ground to allow the rescheduled 2022 60+ 1st XI Cup Final to be played yesterday.
Both teams were treated to arctic conditions but put on a fine spectacle in challenging conditions.
Essex won the toss and asked Sussex to bat. After losing the first wicket at 22 wickets continued to fall quite regularly but Martyn Ford the opening bat stood firm to finish with a wonderful 100 not at out as the Sussex innings closed on 190-8 a challenging total in awkward batting conditions.
In reply Essex lost both openers very cheaply and found themselves 22-2 but a 66 run partnership for the 3rd wicket steadied the ship before Neil Braithwaite (90 not out) and Alan Lord (56 not out) saw Essex home with an unbeaten partnership of 104 with 4.1 overs to spare.
So congratulations to Essex who lifted the Cup and join Cheshire and Kent as triple winners and well done to Sussex for their sterling efforts and having to bat in the less favorable early part of the afternoon.
